Sample shipments to/from Argonne have separate requirements according to their status as non-hazardous or hazardous.



Non-Hazardous Materials

Non-hazardous samples (including dry shippers without liquid), materials, and tools may be shipped to Argonne, or transported by the user. Please contact your local Safety Office for assistance with proper shipping methods. Packages should be addressed as follows:

Saturday Deliveries

Saturday deliveries are accommodated but the following requirements must be satisfied to obtain this service:

a) Notification of Saturday delivery no later than 12PM CST on the Friday before expected delivery. To arrange service, please contact directly Argonne FMS staff:

b) Sending an e-mail alone will not guarantee Saturday service.  The service requestor must directly interface with one of the individuals above to confirm the service arrangement.

c) Only deliveries via Federal Express (FedEx) which are non-hazardous and non-radioactive class material will be allowed. Any hazardous or radioactive material class items will be refused.

d) Delivery address must include the Contact Name and Argonne Guest House, Building 460.  Argonne FMS staff will accept the deliveries at the Argonne Guest House and transport directly to the designated receipt location at APS.

e) A contact name, location within APS, and contact phone numbers (desk and cell if available) for recipient who will be present at APS at the time of delivery must be provided to the Argonne FMS staff.


Biohazardous Materials

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is forbidden to transport to Argonne or perform experiments at the APS with any of the Select Agents Listed by the CDC, and any of the high consequence livestock and plant pathogens and toxins listed in APHIS Agricultural Select Agents. The penalties for violating this law are severe. The APS is not registered with the CDC to possess, receive, or transport Select Agents.



Hazardous Materials

Users are NOT allowed to bring or ship hazardous or infectious substances directly to CARS. These substances are materials identified as hazardous by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or International Air Transport Association (IATA), such as liquid nitrogen, propane, freon or ethane, and biological samples that are identified as hazardous by DOT or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These substances must be shipped to the address given below.


Under no circumstances may users transport a nonexempt hazardous or bio-hazardous material to the APS in their own vehicles.
